Singtel extends English Premier League rights in Singapore until 2022
Singtel has announced it will continue broadcasting the English Premier League in Singapore for the next three seasons.
The deal, which runs from August 2019 to May 2022, will see Singtel’s reign as the official broadcaster of the EPL in Singapore extended to 12 consecutive years. Aside from the EPL, Singtel also has rights to the UEFA Champions League, FA Cup and eight more football leagues and cup competitions.
"We are pleased to continue offering fans front row seats to all the action from the English top-flight clubs. Fans can be assured Premier League coverage remains affordable as we will keep prices unchanged,” said Yuen Kuan Moon, the chief executive officer for consumer Singapore at Singtel.
Singtel paid more than previous rights holder StarHub for the EPL broadcast rights from 2010 to 2013, which stands at a reported $400m, triple the amount of what StarHub reportedly paid in the previous cycle. It also won the last bid in 2015 for another three seasons from 2016 to 2019.
The EPL has a loyal following in Singapore, with Singtel subscribers paying $59.90 each month before 2016, with rates staying the same after it won the last bid. The broadcaster did not reveal how much it paid for the rights this time and if subscription costs will increase.
For the rest of South East Asia, Facebook beat out broadcasters BeIN Sports and Fox Sports Asia in July to secure about £200m worth of exclusive rights to broadcast live EPL matches in from 2019.
The social media giant will broadcast 380 games in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos.
