Government takes steps to support key workers in IT, data and telecoms

Information Technology

In the early hours of this morning the Government published a list of key workers whose children would continue to be supported with an educational provision as schools across the UK were closed down.

The list includes workers in information technology and data infrastructure sector, as well as key staff working in the telecommunications sector, including but not limited to network operations, field engineering, call centre staff, IT and data infrastructure, 999 and 111 critical services. It also covers those working to maintain public safety and national security.

techUK is working closely with Government to ensure workers in the digital and tech sector who will be essential to the maintenance of our digital infrastructure are recognised as critical workers not just now, but as any further restrictions on movement are introduced.

The Government has urged employers about the need to be responsible about who needs to be in the office and are encouraging them to help their staff find alternative arrangements to support them working from home.

Critical workers include those in the categories of:

  • Health and social care
  • Education and childcare
  • Key public services
  • The local and national government
  • Food and other necessary goods
  • Public safety and national security
  • Transport
  • Utilities, communication and financial services
