PwC partner departs to join DWF as global cybersecurity head
A PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) partner, Stewart Room, has made a move from the Big Four professional services provider to join London stock exchange-listed law firm DWF, as its new global head of data protection
The move follows the departure of two other veterans from PwC in January, Keily Blair and James Lloyd, who were hired by Orrick to launch its cybersecurity-focused practice in London.
Since 2014, Room served as global head and partner of cybersecurity and data protection legal services at PwC. This followed a seven-year stint at Field Fisher Waterhouse (now Fieldfisher) in which he helped build the firm’s data protection legal practice and, before this a five-year stretch at Rowe Cohen Solicitors, commencing in 2001.
Prior to that, Room practiced as a barrister at Temple Chambers and Lincoln’s Inn Chambers between 1991 and 2000, and, for the last 13 years, he has been, and continues to be, president of the National Association of Data Protection Officers.
Room was involved in the first court challenge of the Information Commissioner’s personal breach notification strategy, and a successful attempt to overturn the first ever security encryption enforcement notice.
His clients have been data controllers, private investigators, individuals, the government and major technology companies, which he has advised on regulatory investigations and enforcement proceedings brought by the information commissioner.
At DWF, Room will “help lead and grow our data protection and cyber security practice globally” said CEO Andrew Leaitherland, in a statement. He will also represent clients on intricate information management, data protection, commercial use of data and security of data and systems matters as well as regulatory investigations and misuse of data litigation.
