On the UK side, Newcastle has been chosen as its landing point, will facilities to be built to bring the cable ashore. The system will then have forward fibre connectivity to Ireland and the US.

The new system has been designed with 8 fibre-pairs with an initial capacity of 1x400Gbps although it has been designed to offer a total of 240TBps.

In terms of timeline, the project was officially launched this quarter with permitting and the marine survey due for Q1/Q2 of 2020. After this permitting and manufacturing dry & wet in next, due Q3-Q4. Installation is expected to be completed by Q1-Q2 2021 with RFS set for Q4 2021.

In a LinkedIn post, Ketil Barkved, CEO of NO-UK Com said, “The cable will offer the fastest, direct route open cable between the Nordics and UK/Ireland/US and offer unprecedented opportunities for companies looking to access the vast 100% green electric energy in this region. Ready for service Q3 2021, dark fiber and shared capacity/spectrum will be among the products offered = a range of opportunities for new establishments in the region. In combination with Euroconnect1 from Altibox, the 2 cable systems connect the dots in Ireland, UK, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, and Sweden directly to Norway.”

NO-UK Com delivers connectivity to the UK and US from Norway through dark fibre, subsea and spectrum assets. On its website, its vision is described as delivering ‘high-quality dark fibre connections enabling the establishment of large data centres in Norway. The data centres should consume green hydropower produced in the region and enable Norway to become part of a global edge/core data network by 2020.‘
