DE-CIX arrives at Global Switch: Madrid continues to increase its capacity for international interconnection

Data Centre

Madrid – 27 November 2019. DE-CIX, the world’s leading Internet Exchange operator, has this week announced that the Madrid data center of Global Switch, a leading large-scale carrier and cloud neutral data center provider, will be a DE-CIX enabled site going forward, offering DE-CIX’s premium interconnection services such as peering and cloud exchange in the Spanish capital. The services also include GlobePEER remote, a specific DE-CIX interconnection service that not only offers direct access to DE-CIX in Frankfurt, the world’s leading Internet Exchange by peak traffic, but it also opens the door to the world’s largest interconnection ecosystem as customers at Global Switch Madrid can use their existing access to peer remotely at other DE-CIX locations. As of today, the DE-CIX platforms in Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich, Dusseldorf, Berlin, New York, Madrid, Lisbon, Marseille, Palermo, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Dubai, and Istanbul are interconnected, offering access to thousands of networks from all continents. Adding Global Switch as a DE-CIX enabled site will extend DE-CIX’s Madrid presence to four sites locally, which will allow more customers to access this global interconnection network.

"The agreement with Global Switch demonstrates the potential of Madrid as a digital hub. The introduction of this new location is part of our commitment to continuously promote and expand the interconnection ecosystem in the Iberian Peninsula. Madrid's data growth continues to surprise us, as it had already doubled its peak traffic in the first months of 2019 and reached more than 150 connected networks. Global Switch is a great partner that will help us continue to offer reliable services and increased interconnection capacity in Spain," said Theresa Bobis, Regional Director South Europe at DE-CIX.

Markel Gruber, Managing Director Madrid from Global Switch added: "Having DE-CIX services in our data center in Madrid is a great opportunity for our customers, as they will gain access to a large number of networks in a single infrastructure. With this agreement, we continue on our path of providing a neutral, flexible, secure ecosystem and increasing interconnection possibilities, at a moment when exchanging traffic is extremely important in order to offer an efficient network experience without latency”.

As explained in the report “Madrid, a digital hub for Southern Europe” sponsored by DE-CIX and developed by Delfos Research, Madrid is ideally placed to become an international communications hub and is in a privileged geographical position to act as a gateway for traffic from West Africa and the Americas to Europe, replacing London. In this context, the study reveals that more than 1,800 jobs would be created with an investment of 500 million Euros in infrastructure, which in turn would have a return of more than 6 billion Euros in just 5 years.
