CGI secures £20m contract to develop MoD cyber threat system

Canadian outsourcing giant CGI has secured a £20m contract to further develop the Ministry of Defence’s cyber threat analysis system.

CGI won a £5.6m two-year contract to build a “cyber situational awareness fusion architecture” for the MoD in 2016. At the time, CGI said the service would combine various data sources to support “decision-making in cyber defence”.

Now, the firm has won a further £20.3m contract to deliver the next generation of architecture. According to the contract notice, CGI will act as the technical authority on the MoD’s “Defensive Cyber Capability”.

The government has pledged to invest a total of £265m in military cyber defences, funding the launch of a Cyber Security Operations Centre for the MoD. Earlier this year, it also unveiled plans to automate the analysis of cyber risk data held within the databases CGI manages.

When the initiative was launched in 2016, the then defence secretary Michael Fallon said cyber attacks were one of the “greatest challenges to our security”. He added: “It’s crucial we use our increasing defence budget to stay ahead and investing in this programme will help us protect against these threats.”

CGI, which has worked with the MoD for more than 40 years, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But the company’s senior vice president, Steve Smart, said at the time of the initial contract award in 2016: “We will build upon our strong relationships with the MoD to establish a highly effective collaborative working environment which is flexible and can deliver at pace.”
