Cisco Extends Collaboration Portfolio
Introduces new room systems, headsets, meeting scheduling functionality, and Webex edge services
Amid continued leadership changes – which yesterday saw CTO Jonathan Rosenberg take his leave and Cullen Jennings, a Cisco Fellow, step into that role – Cisco today unveiled a batch of enhancements for its meetings portfolio, spanning new room systems and headsets, simplified scheduling, and edge services.
New Hardware: Room Systems, Headsets
Recognizing that different meeting spaces have different technology requirements, Cisco has introduced three new room devices:
- Webex Room Kit Pro - replaces the SX80 model, supporting any size screen. It features six concurrent video inputs, three outputs (two 2x 4kp60 and one 4kp30), eight microphone inputs, and cloud and on-prem registration. On the artificial intelligence (AI) front, Room Kit Pro features intelligent views with speaker tracking and people count technology, noise suppression, and voice commands.
- Webex Room 70 G2 - the newest addition to Cisco's Room Series portfolio, a "revved-up version" of the Room 70. It uses Cisco's new Webex Codec Pro technology platform, which is outfitted with more inputs and outputs to make the system adaptable to multiple room sizes. Room 70 G2 is available in single- or dual-screen models, includes the same AI features as the Room Kit Pro, and costs the same as the Room 70.
- Webex Room 55 Dual - modeled after the MX700, this unit features two 55-inch screens, a built-in quad camera bar, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and the Codec Plus technology platform. All the same AI features are included, and it's listed at a price 20% lower than the MX700.
All three of these room systems are available this month.
Also on the hardware front, Cisco has added two wireless headsets plus additional wired models to the 500 Series announced at Enterprise Connect in March. The new wireless headsets, the 561 (single earpiece) and 562 (dual earpiece), are targeted at office workers, whereas the earlier 500 Series headsets are wired devices primarily targeted at contact center agents, Angie Mistretta, senior director of Collaboration Solutions Marketing at Cisco, told to me.
The new wired models, the 521 and 522, are differentiated from the earlier headsets in that they are for use with either a USB adapter, included, or a standard headphone jack.
Looking at the Edge
Lastly, Cisco introduced a set of edge services aimed at providing cost savings and improved quality. The three Cisco Webex Edge Services are: Webex Edge Audio, which provides more choices for how an enterprise manages meeting audio by allowing the decoupling of Webex and the PSTN; Webex Edge Connect, a dedicated, managed, QoS-enabled IP link from premises to Webex via the Equinix cloud exchange; and Webex Edge Video Mesh, which enables local media processing for Webex on-premises meetings attendees. These can be deployed separately or together, Cisco said.
"We are re-architecting the edge so that you can maximize the power of the Webex backbone directly in your own data center," wrote Javed Khan, VP and GM of Cisco's Cloud Collaboration Technology Group, on a Cisco Blogs post.
Webex Edge is included within the Cisco Collaboration Flex Plan meeting subscription, but enterprises will incur additional monthly charges for peering, Cisco said.
