Telefonica Germany CEO Brings Departure Forward

Thorsten Dirks was due to leave company at end of September but will leaves at end of March instead.

Telefonica Germany CEO Thorsten Dirks has brought forward his departure date to the end of March instead of the end of September next year, after agreeing an early termination of his contract with the company’s board.

Dirks was appointed CEO of Telefonica Germany in October 2014, following the acquisition of E-Plus from Dutch incumbent KPN.

In a statement late on Monday, Telefonica said the major strategic objectives of the merger have already been accomplished: the organisational integration has been largely completed, and a credible mid-term vision and detailed plans for the company’s digital transformation have been developed.

“On behalf of the supervisory board I would like to take the opportunity at this stage to thank Thorsten Dirks for the exceptional collaboration and successful development of the company,” said Eva Castillo, chairwoman of Telefonica Germany’s supervisory board.

Telefonica said Dirks is leaving to pursue new challenges “in line with his personal career plans in 2017.” He will work with the management team to ensure a smooth handover before leaving at the end of March.

“It has been a privilege to lead Telefonica Germany throughout the merger. We have laid out the foundation for a very successful future for the company,” Dirks said.

Telefonica did not name a replacement, and simply said it will make an announcement about Dirks’ successor in due course.
