SSE Enterprise Telecoms Doubles Network Footprint in Capita Deal

SSE Enterprise Telecoms set to expand national Ethernet connectivity service for business customers, while Capita and Updata get additional strength for outsourcing projects

Business connectivity supplier SSE Enterprise Telecoms has said it will double the size of its network footprint in the UK from 250,000 to 500,000 business postcodes after signing a large scale, fixed line network sharing deal with outsourcer Capita’snetworking division, Updata.

The seven-year partnership will enhance SSE’s regional network footprint by adding 350 BT exchanges, shaving two years off its ongoing Project Edge build and reducing its costs by around half.

Meanwhile, Capita and Updata gain access to a high-availability, terabit capacity, national optical network for major outsourcing projects. All eight of their regional datacentres will be connected directly and diversely to the SSE network to offer secure CESG CAS-Tconnectivity to the public sector.

SSE’s managing director, Colin Sempill, said while network and infrastructure models were relatively common in mobile markets, a partnership of this scale in fixed line telecoms was still rather unusual.

“Doubling our service footprint in a relatively short period of time will make us one of the largest fixed line telecoms providers in the UK at a stroke,” he said.

“When combined with our reputation for reliability and service delivery performance, it will allow many thousands more businesses to benefit from our brand of high capacity, high availability services more cost effectively than ever before.”

The network is also engineered to bring high performance, low latency synchronous replication, cloud service aggregation, network service orchestration and managed IT service delivery to customer sites around the UK.

Béatrice Butsana-Sita, managing director at Updata, added: “It’s very important to us that our customers gain access to the kind of robust, scalable, high capacity networking fabric that SSE provides nationally.

“Connecting our assets together in a way that allows each to share the benefits of the other just made sense. Specifically, this will allow us to provide dedicated networking services to enterprise-sized clients that need connectivity in all corners of the UK,” she said.
