What was your first sales job?

Selling aircraft spares.

What technological advancements make your job easier now than it did when you first started?

Sad to admit that it is the mobile phone as I started way before they existed, even as bricks!

What makes your company better than your competitors?

It should always be the people that work there.

What will be the biggest challenges you will face in your job over the next 6 months?

The rise of cloud based application delivery will change the value add that Telecoms businesses can provide, managed services will diminish quickly as software defined networks flourish.

What are the biggest recruitment issues you are facing in your sector?

Finding good quality technical support people and keeping them. Unless you have the latest innovations and continually move forward, they quickly move to a company that does.

Which part of a CV do you like to look at first?

For sales people, I look at their achievements and check if they are real. I also pay close attention to see what they say about themselves in the opening summary, nothing should be in there that can’t be justified in an interview.

What is the strangest question a candidate has asked you in an interview?

Can I have another chance when I am sober!

Top 3 excuses you have heard from sales people who fail to deliver?

1. If they win it is because of their relationship, if they lose it is because of the price.
2. I know I haven’t hit my target but I was just about to win that large order that’s been in my pipeline for ….. (ever).
3. But I am working really hard (in the office) and I just don’t get the breaks.

Are people leaving education equipped to succeed within this industry?

I would hope so with all the people attending University now! Education teaches people how to learn, I think it is up to industry to teach people what to learn and how to apply it.

How is the skill shortage affecting your industry?

There is less of a skill shortage for Telco’s as so many are merging due to overcapacity. The skill shortage will be for those that have skills sets in SaaS services and data management.

What are you doing differently to ensure you attract the best talent?

Keep the business in the news for all the right reasons!

Why do you think people like to work for you?

I always work with my team to ensure they reach their goals, I support and coach them to challenge themselves. 

What do you think your customers say about you?

I understand their business goals and do my best to put the right people in place to support them.

What motivates you to get out of bed in the morning?

Money is my main motivator at work, if I could work longer and earn more, I would choose that every time. That’s why I went into sales. My dog also barks at 5.30 each morning and so that helps!

How do you switch off from work?

I fly my glider in the summer and coach my son’s rugby team in the winter.

What was the last book you read?

A Game of Thrones

What was your proudest achievement outside of work?

Bringing up 4 happy kids.

What technology could you not live without?

Mobile phones

If you were prime minister for a day what law would you pass?

I am too shallow to be prime minister, see my next answer!
